Taking “Community” to the Next Level – It Starts With You

I’ve been reading through all of the comments on ProBlogger’s recent post on blogging-related New Year’s Resolutions, and wasn’t necessarily surprised to see repeating resolutions related to creating more content, more useful content, increasing subscribers, increasing ad revenue, and such.

What’s Wrong With That?

While I don’t think these are bad resolutions to have (I’d call them “goals”, but that’s just me), I still feel like the blogging community majority is still missing the point. Yes, blogging is based on creating solid useful content, and some of us have aspirations to make a living, or at least a supplemental income, from publishing to a blog. But, the real key to long-term successful blogging (for money or for pure satisfaction) is community.

Oh Yeah, Community! You mean the people that I hope come subscribe to my blog so I make more money…

Most of us are on Facebook and Twitter and maintain a blog at this point, but how often do you seek out new blogs (and hence people) concentrated on your same subject matter? How about ones not related at all to your subject matter? How about ones in your neighborhood or region? How about ones by people from your ethnic, special needs, or special interest group? Now you’re getting my point…

Taking Community a Step Further

To be successful as a blogging community, we need to support one another. That doesn’t mean building a community for the only (selfish) reason of getting more people to come to your blog and boosting your subscriber count. It’s also about supporting other bloggers in their interest, either by subscribing to their blog, viewing it occasionally, following them on Twitter, publicizing their blog on your Facebook profile or Twitter stream, or providing a useful comment.

Do You Walk the Talk?

I do! It’s become clear to me as I’ve advanced my blogging career that what brings me true satisfaction is helping others. I do trust that if I follow my gut with this one, that the rest (fame and riches, of course) are just around the corner.

With that, make sure you visit the following blogs, and subscribe, give them a shout out on Twitter, or just leave a thoughtful comment. If we all do things like this EVERY DAY, we all will prosper!

    Heather,
Thanks for such a great post and including me in it! You just got one more subscriber to your blog. I admit, I wasn’t subscribed.
I wouldn’t have been able to get as far as I have without the support of many others in the community. I look forward to continuing to grow in that area and welcome others to ask me if they need some support of their own.

Wow, Wow! Heather you have really blessed my soul this day. I just saw your tweet about me and the others and I’m just overwhelmed…..I mean it …over whelmed! I got up this morning a little angry about how I always open up my heart to help others and I felt like know one really understood the way I felt. When I met you a few weeks ago I could tell threw your emails that you were a wonderful person who cared for others. I Thank you for bringing me into your twitter world and into your blogging community. I want you to know that if I can assist you in anyway…I’m always here to do just that and more.

    Thank you again ;0)

Thank you, Lisa! I just really truly believe in doing right by others…it is that simple. I did my research on you, too, before I even offered to help you in any way. I could tell also that you are just a downright good person out to help others. And I felt drawn to helping you because of it. WAHM’s/bloggers/entrepreneurs – unite & succeed!

    Heather-

thanks sooo much for the shout out and the support. Going in to 2010, I feel like we all need to work together & support each other as the big “shift” occurs… into the cyber world. We are all so much more connected, and in a good way. Had it not been for twitter, we would have never met!

I’ve been skimming over your site but I can’t seem to figure out how you make money by getting subscribers to your blog. I’ve had some ideas for what I’d think would make interesting blogs but I hadn’t realized it could also make money. What’s the catch?

@Ben – No catch really, except that you must write great content that helps others…and work really really hard. This will naturally gain you site views and subscribers that can be used to pull advertising opportunities to your site. Some people use things like Google AdSense, where you place ads on your site and get paid every time someone clicks on those ads. This usually doesn’t bring in more than $1 or $2 for the average “getting started” blogger. However, if you are patient and wait ’til your numbers prove you have eyes on your site, this puts you in a position where you can start to contact potential advertisers that match your site’s interest. For example, if you are interested in woodworking, maybe you’d contact the company Stanley (they make tools/saws, right?) to see if they’d want to place a 200px by 200px ad on your site for $X per month.

There are also other ways, including affiliate marketing (people buy things from another site by clicking through your site – you refer them), offering a product like an e-book, and many others.

Here is a great article from a very reputable blogger (ProBlogger) that I hope helps you: http://bit.ly/7fg1VO

And, if you ever have any other questions or need help getting started, feel free to let me know.
