I feel so compelled to share this video in as many venues as possible, as it is probably one of THE MOST INSPIRATIONAL talks I have ever seen. It is a talk by Simon Sinek from this past September at a TED convention in Puget Sound, and I finally watched it tonight at rYnoweb.com. It is worth all 18 minutes you will spend watching it... For some of you, I want you to watch and reflect on yourself. Why do you do what you do? How has that worked out for you? Are you happy? Rich? Successful by your definition? For others, I want you to watch it to understand more of me. Do you now understand … [Read more...]
Can You Build a Business By Giving Away Your Work?

This question has been eating at me for the past eight months, ever since I started fixing my family and friends' computers for free. Somewhere in there I got interested in building websites also, so I built some of those for free too. Giving work away to those who really need it makes me feel great. But can it work as part of a business model? Leave a comment after the post and let me know your thoughts. I'm Cheap & Happy The last few weeks have been amazing. I left my corporate job to follow my gut and be an at-home mom and entrepreneur - a.k.a. a "mompreneur." I love that I am being … [Read more...]
Help for Haiti – Simple Typing to Raise Awareness & Money
I've decided to reapply this blog post from Anna Smith at The Penny Sophisticate to help do my family's part in helping out the poor families in Haiti that have been rocked by the earthquake. She has decided to donate $0.50 for every comment that is left on a blog post similar to this one. I will do the same - for every comment left here, I will donate $0.50 to the Red Cross to help the rescue and repair efforts in Haiti. Somehow I don't feel like that is enough, but it is something. I have to embarassingly admit that I have steered clear of almost all of the news and pictures on the subject. … [Read more...]
Reflection on My Corporate Career with P&G
Today is the end of an era for me. For the past 10 years I've worked for Procter & Gamble in two different locations, Green Bay, WI (Charmin, Bounty, Puffs) and North Chicago, IL (Gillette intermediate chemical). And contrary to popular belief, I don't regret a minute of it. The Wonder Years My best memories are those of my first 3 years with the company, when it was very similar to college life (except I got paid the big bucks!). I was hired in a group of six other recent grads, and we were a social (i.e. drinking) bunch. Happy Hour on Thursday at Cock & Bull was typical. You didn't … [Read more...]
Taking “Community” to the Next Level – It Starts With You
I've been reading through all of the comments on ProBlogger's recent post on blogging-related New Year's Resolutions, and wasn't necessarily surprised to see repeating resolutions related to creating more content, more useful content, increasing subscribers, increasing ad revenue, and such. What's Wrong With That? While I don't think these are bad resolutions to have (I'd call them "goals", but that's just me), I still feel like the blogging community majority is still missing the point. Yes, blogging is based on creating solid useful content, and some of us have aspirations to make a living, … [Read more...]
Changing Jobs or Careers? 6 Tips on How to Resign in Style
Recently I put in my resignation at the company that's employed me for nearly 10 years so that I can pursue my own business venture that allows me to be home with my kids during the daytime hours. Yes, I'll be in the groups labeled "work at home moms" and "mompreneurs". I've almost quit several times in my 10 year career there, but this time my threats were not idle. They wouldn't necessarily be perceived as threats, though, either, because I followed these tips below. And as a result, I am confident in my decision, am transitioning well, and have even been complimented by the hierarchy of the … [Read more...]
Heather’s New Year’s Resolutions – 2010

I'm not usually one to make New Year's resolutions. I think it's the fear of failing in front of others that scares me out of ever proclaiming that I'd really like to succeed at anything at all. I'm facing that fear today, New Year's Day 2010 (pronounced "twenty-ten" per this site) by proclaiming in front of all of the internet population my goals for the year. I trust you won't tar and feather me if I don't come through on them all... I'd love to see what others' resolutions are also - please leave a comment here with yours! Happy New Year and Decade! Personal items first: Lose 40 lbs the … [Read more...]
